Proterozoic : the oldest traces of the region's history date from this eon, the last one of the Pre-Cambrian.
Oldest rocks
The Proterozoic (from the Greek first life) saw the appearance of plate tectonics and the first traces of life on Earth.
It is part of a super eon, the Pre-Cambrian, which includes the first three eons of Earth's history:
- The Hadean (from the Greek Hades, the underworld): -4.6 to -4 billion years ago
- Period of extreme temperatures and intense bombardment, the impact of which with a planetoid will give rise to the Moon.
- The Archaean (from the Greek meaning ancient): -4 to -2.5 billion years ago
- Formation of the earth's crust
- The Proterozoic: -2.5 billion years ago -550 million years ago
