Perfume has been known since oldest civilizations but this is not until XVIth century that alcohool-based perfumery segment started to develop, thanks to the work from venitian and german chemists.

Yet, in XVIIIth century, tannery started to decline in Grasse, in particular because of increasing taxes, wheras local master glovers were looking for improving the unpleasant smell of pelts. As such, the city turned to the perfumry segment, for leather initially, providing a way for tanners to find new jobs.

For this, Grasse benefits of local primary materials (lavander, jasmine, roses,...) that will allow to quickly take a leadership role in France, and to end up being considered as the worldwilde capital of perfume. Well-known brands, like Dior and famous perfumes, like Chanel N°5, use the know-how of its perfumers.
