Since animals do not know territorial limits, it benefits from a vast protected area, between the Mercantour National Park on the French side of Pas de Préfouns and its counterpart, the Parco Naturale Alpi Marittime on the Italian side, the pass marking the border between the two countries.
With its horns that can reach 1 meter in males, but smaller in females, the adult ibex does not really have any natural predators.
Measuring up to 90 centimeters at the withers, the ibex is a stocky animal that can weigh up to 100 kilograms in the largest males.
It likes rocky environments, digging through the snow in winter to find some vegetation and descending into the valleys in spring to regain its strength.
