Antibes was founded in the 5th century BC by the Greek colony of Marseille, which gave it the name of Antipolis, the city opposite, probably because it is facing Corsica.
The current ramparts were designed by the engineer Raymond de Bonnefons for Henri IV and built shortly after 1600.
