Cavillon Caves (left) and Barma Grande (right), Grimaldi - Italy
The Balzi-Rossi caves are located in the village of Grimaldi, on the Italian side of the border with France.
This set of seven caves was inhabited since the end of the Lower Paleolithic, 230,000 years ago, first by Neanderthals and their ancestors, then by Homo Sapiens.
A pre-Neanderthal fragment was found in the Prince's cave, dated 230,000 years ago.
The caves were submerged under the waters from -120,000 to -80,000 years, before being again occupied by Neanderthals.
Then, less than 40,000 years ago, it was Homo Sapiens' turn to settle there, whose bones were found in the cave of Barma Grande and that of Cavillon.
