The prehistory of humanity corresponds to the Paleolithic period, which is divided into the archaic, lower, middle and upper Paleolithic.
The Paleolithic, or "old stone age", begins shortly before the Quaternary era and is subdivided into :
- Archaic Paleolithic: first ancestors of man, almost 10 million years ago
- Lower Paleolithic: appearance of man, around 2 million years ago
- Middle Paleolithic: generalization of tools, around 500,000 years ago
- Upper Paleolithic: arrival of modern man in Europe, around 40,000 years ago
The Mesolithic marks the end of prehistory, 10,000 years ago for Europe.
- Mesolithic: social sedenterization extending over a period of approximately 5000 years.
Afterwards, it’s protohistory and History with a capital H.
