The Mercantour National Park is home to one of the densest chamois populations in Europe, with more than 10,000 individuals counted in 2021.
The chamois weighs a few tens of kilograms and measures about 80 centimeters at the withers. If it is adapted to the mountain environment, where it lives above the tree line, it can be found in forest areas where it has been recorded at lower altitudes, ranging from about forty meters to more of 3200.
The chamois lives for about fifteen years, feeding on plants and rarely drinking water, recovering the water contained in the plants or the dew on their surfaces.
