The griffon vulture is one of the largest raptors, weighing around 10 kilograms on average for a wingspan of up to 2.80 meters.
It is one of the most endangered species and is protected in France and Europe.
If it already existed on French territory (Pyrenees), a species protection program has avoided its complete disappearance by reintroducing it in different parks, including that of the Gorges du Verdon in 1999, where there are now more than 300 individuals (2021).
The griffon vulture feeds almost exclusively on dead animals, thus playing the role of cleaner of the mountain by eliminating carcasses.
